STV: Michael Westmore walks us through his exhibition at UC-Santa Barbara, Part I

Finally! A new “Switching to Visual” vidchat…and what fun: Part 1 of a personal tour by Trek makeup legend Michael Westmore of “Lifeforms,” his career retrospective now on view at his alma mater, University of California at Santa Barbara, through April 30. Get there if you can!

My thanks to Mike and to UCSB’s AD&A Museum assistant curator Rebecca Harlow for offering the chance to bring this three-part private  visit to life, for those who cannot visit in person. The exhibit of photos, logs, sketches, and of course make-up  prosthetic and prop artifacts opened last fall —and proved so popular it was expanded with Mike’s Oscar-winning non-Trek career highlights too, and extended another four months! It even includes pieces that have never been on display in public before.

Since the opening, Mike has led two walk-throughs in person, spoken to classes, and been interviewed on stage for an audience that was later aired on the University of California educational cable channel.

Mike’s career memoir, Makeup Man, is just out from Lyons Press —and he’ll be signing copies at the UCSB AD&A Musuem at noon-2 pm on Saturday, April 22—among other signing venues to be announced, including #STLV in August.

He’ll also be speaking on his work on the Robert deNiro boxing classic Raging Bull at a pre-screening reception at the museum at 5-6 pm Thursday, April 20, prior to its showing in UCSB’s Pollock Theatre at 7 pm. Tickets are free but will be required and are available online starting 11 am April at the theatre.

Look for the rest of our tour coming soon to STV here on Trekland.
